SCARCE ANTIQUE SIGNED SMALL HAND WROUGHT IRON.BOX ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT PERIOD. Goberg was the epitome of the Jugendstil artist, the German equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide.
Very few of his pieces made it to the U. And have all become quite scarce. This piece of signed Goberg ironwork is a solid hammered iron box with a hinged lid and is lined inside with wood. On the top of the lid there is an iron heart medallion along with a second medallion on the front. Both are attached with small iron rivets. On the inside the box is lined with wood that appears to be cedar. Although the wood lining looks like the box was intended to be a cigar or cheroot humidor, there is no cedar odor to the inside. The piece is 6 ¾ inches long, 4 ½ inches deep, and 2 3/8 inches tall. The inside dimensions are 5 9/16" x 3 3/16" x 1 7/8. It is hand-crafted from a thick gauge of hammered iron so that the box is heavy for it's size; weighing 1 pound 4 ounces, or 568 grams.
Overall in excellent condition with aged patina; and this piece should never be cleaned; it would ruin the look and diminish the value. On the underside of the box it is stamped Goberg, and dates to around 1915. Hugo Goberg hand-wrought ironwork made in Germany during the early 1900's. BANK DRAFTS DRAWN ON A U.
